Underground Parks

Underground parks provide public space in subterranean areas.

Benefits & Problems Addressed

Found spaces: Underground spaces, particularly in dense urban areas with few opportunities for additional greenspace, can add public open space.

Multiple uses: Because underground parks are naturally sheltered, spaces can be used for other activities such as cultural events and classrooms.

Year-round use: The sheltering also allows use during weather extremes.

Tips & Techniques

Candidate Sites: Existing spaces (abandoned underground vaults, transit facilities, underground malls) in good condition and would be easy to identify above ground are the best.

Investment: Even sites in good condition will likely require extensive shoring, engineering and utility upgrades. Be prepared to engage a large number of stakeholders and funders up front.

Hot Buttons: Investment involved, lighting (especially if plants are involved for the park).
